Music/Guitar Playing
Original MP3 Recordings
February 9, 2005 - I probably shouldn't post this since no one
has said anything good about it, but I kinda like it. I plan on
putting this run in one of my new songs :)
A fast run on the E string :)
January 9, 2003 - I was practicing playing fast today so I decided to record some stuff
to see how it sounds. For some reason I decided to post it here.
Enjoy!

Unnamed (mp3 format - 2.5M)
(by Michael Kohn)
Michael Kohn: All Guitars, Bass, Drum Machine
Recorded April 1997 100% line direct with a Mesa Boogie studio preamp
into an analog Tascam 4 track. The drum machine is a Dr. Rhythm DR-660
Even tho this is an old recording and I could play it much smoother now,
this is still one of my favorite songs I've written. I layered this
song a lot differently than most of my other songs. Usually I program
drums and put them down first, but on this song I recorded the rhythm
guitar first and then put either the lead or bass next (can't remember).
The drums were kinda an afterthought. I just pushed some buttons on the
drum machine and recorded it on a 4th track :).

Kill (mp3 format - 2.8M)
(Words by Joe Welch, Music by Michael Kohn)
Joe Welch: Lead Vocals
Michael Kohn: All Guitars, Bass, Drum Machine
Jon Parsons, Brian Grote, Michael Kohn: Background vocals
Sometime around 1994 I was playing in this band called Scimitar.
Since we played with a lot of death metal style bands, Joe decided
we should play some heavier music too and gave me the lyrics for
this song so I could put music to it. Anyway, I laid down a guitar,
bass, and drum track to give to Joe to see if he'd like it. Around
5 years later Joe, Jon, Brian, and I were hanging around and decided
to put vocals on top of this old recording (Cory, the original Scimitar
singer wasn't around). Anyway, this is what we came up with.
The guitar at the begining of the song was recorded through a mini-Marshall
amp running on a 9-volt battery. The rest of the song was recorded through
my old Crate G-212. The drums were programmed with Dynamic Drums.

Bach Little Fugue In G Minor (.mp3 format - 902k)

I never finished this and its an old recording. I had only been
playing guitar for like 3 years when I did this.

Tiger Striped Lotus - I bought this guitar for about $85 so I could
practice woodworking and electronics on it. I scalloped the fretboard using
a file and sandpaper and finished it with wood sealant. I then ripped
out all the electronics and put in DiMarzio Cruiser pickups along with
the tiger-striped pickguard. Cruiser pickups have a nice thick tone
but still have a nice single coil sound. I believe these are almost
as same as the Fast Track pickups I put in the guitar below, except
the two coils in the pickup are different sizes.

Black/White - This is another Lotus I got for about $80. I again ripped
out all the electronics and completely rewired it with DiMarzio Fast
Track picksup. These pickups give it a really thick tone, much thicker
than the Cruiser pickups, without sounding too humbucky. The Fast
Track, along with the Cruiser pickups, are basically a two coil
pickup in a single coil package.

Red Squier - This is the guitar I'm playing the most right now. It's
a Fender Squier Strat which I again ripped out all the electronics and
replaced everything including the pickguard. I scalloped this fretboard
just like the tiger striped guitar, except I did a much nicer job.
I sealed it again with a clear wood sealer. The pickups in the neck
and bridge are DiMarzio HS-3 which have 2 "stacked" coils to get rid
of the single coil hum, but still (in my opinion) have a very single
coil sound to them. The middle pickup is a DiMarzio SDS-1 which is
a noisy, but very loud single coil. If you'd like to see a close up
of what the scalloped fretboard looks like look here:
